What happens at the initial appointment?
The first appointment is what we generally refer to as "full case assessment". During the initial examination appointment, we aim to understand and address your concerns. We will discuss your previous dental history and your general medical condition. Following this we will carry out a thorough examination of your mouth condition. Among other things, we will check for periodontal or gum disease using instruments and X-rays. An instrument called a periodontal probe is used to gently measure the depth of the gum pockets.
Once all the data has been gathered, we will discuss different treatment options with you. The first visit usually lasts 45-60 minutes. Should your case be particularly complex, or need more time to plan, we may ask you to have a second consultation appointment, at no extra cost. A detailed clinical report will then be written and sent to you and to your dentist and will include the cost of the proposed treatment plan.
Will it hurt?
We will be as gentle as possible. The periodontal exam can be done with little or no discomfort.
Do I need x-rays?
Appropriate radiographs will be taken if needed and are included in the initial fee. We may contact your dentist for copies of any recent or relevant x-rays that have been taken.
Will I need surgery?
Not everyone needs periodontal surgery. If treated early, gum disease can be controlled without surgery. Our philosophy is to treat as conservatively as possible to attain treatment goals.
Because we’re specialist dentists, your dentist can refer you or you can contact us direct.
